PFC Delivers First Northern California Freestanding Egg Bank

Posted on March 12, 2013 by Inception Fertility

Already boasting one of the largest egg donor programs in the country, the Pacific Fertility Center (PFC) opened the first freestanding egg bank in Northern California last year.

PFC now offers patients frozen donor cycles through its Pacific Fertility Egg Bank (PFEB). As with donors providing fresh eggs, donors of eggs for frozen cycles have passed extensive medical, genetic, and psychological screening.

Along with other published studies worldwide, PFC's clinical results confirm that the chance of a live birth using frozen eggs is comparable to that of using fresh eggs. World data also shows no increased incidences of birth defects in babies born from embryos derived from frozen eggs.

In addition to high pregnancy success rates and cost-effectiveness, frozen donor cycles lend scheduling flexibility. Because the eggs are already frozen, there's no need to synchronize cycles between the donor and recipient. Once the recipient has selected a donor, she can start treatment when it's most convenient for her.

Highly innovative egg "freezing" technology (vitrification) makes the Pacific Fertility Egg Bank and frozen donor cycles possible. This technique is an ultra-rapid process that prevents crystal formation, which can damage the egg. Instead, vitrification turns the egg into a glasslike substance, making it work more reliably with unfertilized eggs.

The PFC lab has gained tremendous expertise with vitrification technology, which it's used since 2007. Along with the highest laboratory security and quality control, the PFC lab has a proven track record of babies born using this technology.

A recent endorsement by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has lent further credibility to the use of frozen eggs. In October, ASRM lifted the label of "experimental" from egg freezing. This may provide reassurance to patients who wish to proceed with this technique.

Patients at PFC can rest assured that frozen donor egg cycles coordinated through its new Pacific Fertility Egg Bank can provide a convenient, less expensive, and highly successful option for building a family.
